Why Hemp Fabric is Great for Clothes

Hemp fabric isn’t only hip and fashionable, there are also many tangible benefits from buying and wearing clothing made from hemp fiber. Even mothers are using hemp cloth to make diapers for their babies because it is such an amazingly strong and durable fabric.

Hemp is very strong

Hemp is a natural fiber that is three times as strong as cotton. The fibers of hemp are long and strong which makes it incredibly durable. In fact, one of the primary uses for hemp used to be to make ropes and sails because hemp was strong enough to be reliable at sea.

Hemp fiber can be a bit coarse compared to other fibers, however it can be blended with cotton and silk to take advantage of it’s strength while producing a softer, more flowing fabric.

Hemp has natural antimicrobial and anti-mildew properties

Hemp not only has antimicrobial and antibacterial properties, it also breathes very easily and blocks out more UV radiation than most other fabrics. This makes it ideal for outdoor activity in hot, humid conditions.

Hemp fiber can also be very absorbent, which is one of the reasons why it is now used to make cloth diapers for babies. It can also be used to make environmentally friendly insulation for houses and other buildings.

Hemp is environmentally friendly

Hemp does not require as much water as cotton. Even better, it has susceptible to fewer pests which means that hemp growers do not have to use as many pesticides, which can wreck havoc on delicate ecosystems. The deep roots of the hemp plant can help keep soil erosion at bay, too.

Hemp matures fast and has a much greater yield per acre than either cotton or flax. So, with less water, land and effort farmers can grow more fiber to be used in clothing and other applications.

Wearing clothing made from hemp is one way to encourage farmers to grow more of it and for retailers to buy it to put in their stores. The more hemp that is grown in lieu of other environmentally costly sources of fabric, the better for the planet. Wearing hemp clothing is good for your body and skin and for the environment.
